Before it became a cult BBC television comedy, Little Britain was a cult BBC radio comedy. Many of the great characters were born here, as this compilation of the first series – with outtakes and never-broadcast sketches – will reveal to fans who discovered the show onscreen. Entirely without the aid of images of Matt Lucas in unforgettable gut-hugging fishnet as Dafydd, the only “gayer” in his Welsh village, or, in shell suit, cheap jewellery and backcombed hair, as Vicky “Yeah, but, no but...” Pollard, the seriously delinquent schoolgirl, the ideas are fully formed and totally successful. Even David Walliams as Emily “I’m a lady” Howard, Britain’s most unconvincing transvestite, works in audio format. This radio production is a reminder, too, of just how many catchphrases have made their way into everyday banter, Dennis Waterman’s “Write the feem toon, sing the feem toon” among them. Tom Baker adds a pompously nonsensical narration and, for comedy fans everywhere, the whole thing is a surreal treat.Pictured: David Walliams and Matt Lucas© BBC
